| DESCRIPTION | This unit is designed for students with no prior background in biology or science. Whether you are returning to learning after many years or are simply curious about the living world, this course provides a friendly and accessible introduction to biology. Through engaging discussions, visual resources, and real-life examples, students will be guided through the essential building blocks of life. Key topics include the structure and function of cells, the movement of substances in and out of cells, a gentle introduction to basic biological molecules, how we breathe and circulate blood, and how organisms reproduce and defend themselves. Learners will gain a greater appreciation of how the body works and how living things interact with their environment, making biology not just understandable, but meaningful. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the unit the student will be able to: • Describe the basic structure and function of cells, biological molecules, and key life processes; • Explain, in simple terms, how living organisms obtain energy, digest food, defend against disease, reproduce, etc; • Relate biological concepts to everyday life and appreciate the relevance of biology to health, environment, and society. 2. Skills By the end of the unit the student will be able to: • Communicate biological ideas clearly and confidently using simple, correct terminology; • Interpret and use basic diagrams and models to explain biological structures and processes; • Apply problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to make informed observations and decisions in everyday contexts. |
